After earning a master's degree in Information Technology from the University of Cape Town, Wessels initially embarked on a successful career in website development. However, his passion for rugby led him to a different path. In 2008, he started his coaching career as a consultant with Western Province and the Stormers, eventually working as an assistant coach with UCT and the ACT Brumbies in Australia.
His coaching prowess was quickly recognized, and he soon found himself leading the Western Force and Melbourne Rebels, becoming the youngest head coach in Super Rugby history.
