World War II (1939–1945) was a time of intense conflict and upheaval, leaving behind a trail of battlefields, death camps, and artifacts. Beneath the well-documented history of this era lies a world of concealed discoveries, some kept secret intentionally, others lost or buried by desperate measures. From multi-billion dollar treasure maps to sinister experiments, here are ten of the most intriguing WWII discoveries that were hidden or overlooked for decades.

1. The Secret Treasure Map
In 1944, as the Germans invaded Arnhem, Netherlands, four soldiers looted a bank, stealing precious stones, coins, and jewelry worth millions. Fearing the advancing Allies, they buried the treasure in the village of Ommeren. One soldier drew a map to mark the loot’s location, which eventually found its way into the Dutch National Archives. Despite the map’s declassification in 2023, and detailed clues describing the loot buried in bread packages and ammunition boxes, the treasure remains elusive.
Unauthorized metal detectorists have scoured the area, but the poplar tree noted in the map is gone, complicating the search. The town has even banned metal detecting due to the risk of unearthing WWII explosives.
