The Composting Process: From Carbon to Compost
At Earth Care Farm, the composting journey begins with a crucial component: carbon-rich materials. These include leaves, wood chips, and farm trimmings, collected from various sources such as local towns, tree trimmers, and landscapers. This stockpile forms the foundation of their composting process. Carbon materials are stored separately until they are ready to be mixed with nitrogen-rich materials like food scraps and fish waste.
The mixing stage is where the magic happens.
Here, a carbon "nest" is prepared to receive nitrogenous materials. The carbon-to-nitrogen ratio is meticulously maintained at around 30:1, which is ideal for effective composting.
