However, in the early days of the show, it was Penny who first captured Amy’s heart. Chuck Lorre revealed this in an interview, explaining how Amy, who was denied social interactions with other girls during her childhood, found a kindred spirit in Penny.

"Originally, Amy’s first love was Penny.
She wanted girlfriends and a social life with other women because she was denied that as a child. That was the first breakthrough with her character.
