Shonda Rhimes, the powerhouse behind Grey’s Anatomy, has never shied away from tackling sensitive and important issues in her storytelling. In one of the show’s most poignant episodes, titled “Silent All These Years,” Rhimes took on the deeply personal and often silenced subject of sexual assault. However, bringing this powerful narrative to life wasn’t without its challenges. Rhimes had to push back against ABC’s Standards and Practices department to ensure that the episode was depicted with the authenticity and gravity it deserved.

“Silent All These Years” aired in March 2019 and immediately became one of the most talked-about episodes in Grey’s Anatomy history. The episode, inspired by Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony during the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation hearings, centers on a sexual assault survivor’s experience at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
The storyline follows Jo (Camilla Luddington) as she helps a trauma patient who has been sexually assaulted. The patient eventually agrees to undergo a rape kit examination, a procedure that the episode depicts in careful and respectful detail.
