But the transition from sidekick to a central figure in the Netflix sequel brought its own set of challenges, especially with the introduction of Kimmy’s family.

When the creators of decided to introduce Kimmy’s brother, Jimmy Gibbler, Barber was apprehensive. She recalled her initial reaction: “I was like, ‘Guys, no. The fans are going to lord this over me. I’m gonna get questions for the rest of my life.’” Her concerns were valid— fans are notoriously loyal and detail-oriented. The retcon, which altered Kimmy’s backstory, seemed to contradict the established narrative from the original series, where her family was barely mentioned.
