The Role That Saved a Life: Giancarlo Esposito and Breaking Bad
Giancarlo Esposito, renowned for his chilling portrayal of Gus Fring in the hit series Breaking Bad, has revealed how the role quite literally saved his life. Before landing the part, Esposito was struggling financially, facing a darkness that led him to contemplate a desperate plan.
Contemplating the Unthinkable
He found himself in a desperate situation, burdened by the thought of leaving his four children without financial security.
"My way out in my brain was: 'Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?'", Esposito confessed on the Jim & Sam show on SiriusXM. He began to seriously consider staging his own death, believing it was the only way to ensure his family's future. "If I got somebody to knock me off, death by misadventure, [my kids] would get the insurance", he shared, revealing the depths of his despair.
The thought of his children living with the trauma of his loss ultimately stopped him.
"The pain I would cause them would be lifelong," he realized, acknowledging the generational trauma he was trying to escape. He knew he had to find another way.
