In a somber yet supportive display, Prince William hosted a garden party at Buckingham Palace, an event usually attended by his wife, Princess Kate. The occasion, organized on behalf of King Charles III, brought together 8,000 guests from Britain and the Commonwealth. This year, however, was markedly different due to Princess Kate’s ongoing battle with cancer.
Traditionally, the garden party is a joint effort between William and Kate, symbolizing their united front in public duties.
However, in Kate's absence, William was joined by two senior royals, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and a number of younger, nonworking royals. Among them were Zara Tindall, Peter Phillips, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie, who supported William as he took on the hosting duties alone.
Princess Kate’s public absence has been deeply felt since her cancer diagnosis was made public two months ago. Following abdominal surgery in January, she has stepped back from her royal duties to focus on her health.
In her announcement, Kate expressed her determination to return to public life once she has fully recovered, but emphasized the necessity of prioritizing her health for the time being.
