Reporting Roadkill: Essential Tips for Drivers After Hitting an Animal 🦌
Hitting an animal while driving is never a pleasant experience, but it’s something most drivers are likely to face at some point. The longer you're on the road, the greater the chances you'll have an encounter with wildlife. After 30 years of driving, I’ve had my fair share of run-ins with animals, though nothing too severe. But it got me thinking—what are you actually supposed to do after hitting an animal? Should you stop? Report it? Or just keep driving? I decided to dig deeper into the matter, and what I found was enlightening.
The first question most drivers have is: what’s the right thing to do after hitting an animal? The answer isn't always straightforward. If it’s a small wild animal like a squirrel, rabbit, or raccoon, in many cases, you’re not required to call anyone. It’s a sad situation, but there’s often no legal obligation to report smaller incidents. However, if you hit an animal that looks like someone’s pet, it’s important to stop, check the animal, and do your best to find the owner.
Even if no one’s around, a little compassion goes a long way in such situations.
