The Bridgerton series has been a master at weaving intricate plots and unexpected character arcs, but one particular development has left viewers anxiously awaiting the next chapter. While Lady Whistledown's identity remained a closely guarded secret, another character's vile intentions slowly surfaced, setting the stage for an unforeseen villainy in part two.

In the novel, Cressida Cowper is the only member of the ton other than Colin who knows that Penelope is Lady Whistledown and she starts scheming.
Cressida starts trying to blackmail Penelope, threatening to expose her true identity if she doesn’t give her the money she earned from her gossip column. Eventually, Colin and Penelope decide to beat Cressida at her own game and tell the ton themselves that Penelope is Lady Whistledown.

Part one painted Cressida in a sympathetic light, yet this might have been a meticulous setup for her villainous turn in the upcoming season.
The show has already hinted at her tendency for blackmail in episode four when Lord Debling pays a visit to Penelope and she insists she must have blackmailed him in order to win his affection.
We’ll have to wait for part two in order to see whether Cressida gets her redemption arc or if the showrunners follow the plot of the novel.
