Mysterious WWII Shipwrecks Resurface on the Danube River, Sparking Interest and Concern
As the water levels of the mighty Danube River recede, something eerie and historic has re-emerged from its depths—ghostly relics of Germany's Kriegsmarine fleet from World War II. These once-submerged vessels are now visible near the Serbian town of Prahovo, drawing both curious onlookers and raising serious safety concerns. Could these ancient ships, lost for decades, be harboring dangers beneath their rusted hulls?
In the chaos of 1944, as the Red Army advanced, German forces were faced with an impossible choice: abandon their fleet or allow it to fall into Soviet hands. They chose the former, sinking around 200 ships to keep them out of enemy control. Now, thanks to a severe drought, parts of these vessels have returned to the surface, bringing with them stories of a war long past.

The wrecks near Prahovo are not alone. Farther north in Hungary's Danube-Dráva National Park, more vessels dating back to pre-1950 have also surfaced.
