The story begins with Harudo Amakawa, a young man standing outside his family home in the suburbs. He is about to move to the city, leaving behind his childhood crush, Miharu. Miharu is heartbroken and pleads with Harudo to stay, but he dismisses her tears and promises that one day, when he's older, he will return to save her, marry her, and protect her for the rest of his life.
The scene shifts to an older Harudo, now a university student, riding a bus back from school. As he sits, a young girl on the bus stares at him. Suddenly, the bus shakes uncontrollably and is hit by a train, causing chaos. In a bizarre turn of events, Harudo is transported to another world, where he awakens as a filthy, downtrodden boy named Rio.
