Hold onto your hats, General Hospital viewers, because Port Charles' most iconic mobster is teetering on the edge, and the actor who portrays him, Maurice Benard, is bravely sharing why. In a candid revelation that has shocked and worried fans, Benard opened up about his recent mental health struggles, revealing that his character's storyline hit a little too close to home.

Art Imitates Life: A Dangerous Parallel
Benard, who has been open about his bipolar diagnosis, admitted that playing Sonny Corinthos, a character also battling bipolar disorder, while grappling with his own mental health took a serious toll. The current storyline, which sees Sonny refusing to take his medication and spiraling as a result, mirrored Benard's personal struggles, triggering intense anxiety.

"It was a perfect storm," Benard shared, explaining that he hadn't been diligent about his therapy, a crucial part of managing his condition.
"I wasn't going to therapy like I should, and everybody should."
Adding to his stress, his wife and son, his usual rocks of support, were away in Europe.
