A small town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has been rocked by the heartbreaking death of 11-year-old Tysen Benz, who took his own life after a cruel social media prank. What should have been a normal day for Tysen turned into a nightmare, forever altering his family’s world.
It all started as a regular day of texting between Tysen and a 13-year-old girl he knew.
However, things took a dark turn when the girl, pretending to be someone else, faked her own suicide through messages and social media posts. Tysen, devastated and overwhelmed by what he believed to be her death, decided to end his own life in response. Within an hour of receiving these messages, Tysen tragically hanged himself.

His mother, Katrina Goss, found him in their home on March 14, 2017. Though emergency services were able to resuscitate him, Tysen remained on life support for weeks until his passing.
Goss has since expressed her devastation, stating, “He truly believed her. He thought she had died, and he acted on that.”
