"Supernatural," the long-running CW series that captured hearts with its blend of horror, humor, and brotherly love, is facing a new wave of scrutiny, and this time, it's about the show's treatment of its LGBTQ+ fans.

Recent online discussions have sparked a conversation about “Destiel,” the popular pairing of Dean Winchester and the angel Castiel. While fans have long debated the nature of their relationship, many are now pointing to specific moments in the show as evidence of intentional queerbaiting, a tactic used by creators to attract LGBTQ+ viewership without ever delivering on the promise of representation.
“Actually watching 'Supernatural' after being on tumblr for 12 years is wild because you realize that the Destiel girlies were not exaggerating at all,” one fan observed in a viral post. “Destiel really is just that gay at all times and then the CW turns around and personally punches you in the face every time you start to catch on.”
For many “Supernatural” viewers, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community, the show’s handling of Dean and Castiel’s relationship feels like a betrayal.
“Y'all...we weren't crazy,” one fan wrote. "We were actively dragged around and taunted for 12 years.”
The show, which ran for 15 seasons, had a rotating roster of writers, which led to inconsistencies in the portrayal of Dean and Castiel’s bond.
