Berlinah Wallace, a former fashion student, and her ex-boyfriend Mark van Dongen had been in a tumultuous relationship that ended when van Dongen left her for another woman. A Life Shattered: The Aftermath of the Acid Attack
The attack left van Dongen with life-altering injuries. He suffered severe burns to 25% of his body, lost vision in one eye, and was paralyzed from the neck down. His injuries were so severe that he spent the next 14 months in hospitals, undergoing numerous surgeries and living in constant pain. Despite the medical efforts, van Dongen’s suffering was unbearable. In January 2017, he chose euthanasia in Belgium, where assisted dying is legal, ending his life and the agony he had endured since that fateful night.
