Historic Punishment in Indonesia: Gay Couple Publicly Whipped for First Time
In a shocking and unprecedented move, two men in Indonesia were subjected to public whipping in April 2023. This marks the first time in the country’s history that such a severe punishment has been meted out specifically for same-sex activity.
The two men, who have not been named for privacy reasons, were punished under the strict Sharia law implemented in the Aceh province, a region known for its conservative interpretation of Islam.
The punishment, consisting of 77 lashes each, was meted out in front of a crowd in a public square, drawing considerable attention both within Indonesia and from international human rights organizations.

The scene was both dramatic and distressing. As the crowd watched in silence, the gravity of the situation became clear. "The public punishment is intended to deter others from engaging in similar behavior," stated a local official.
However, this approach has sparked a massive outcry from human rights groups and international communities, who argue that such actions violate basic human rights.
