The saying goes, "There are only two things certain in life: death and taxes." While taxes are something we navigate with varying degrees of ease, death remains a profound mystery. Today, we'll explore what happens to the body and mind after death, and touch upon the mystical beliefs about the afterlife.
The Physical Process of Dying
When someone dies, their body undergoes a series of physical changes that can be scientifically observed. Initially, without the heart pumping blood and the lungs breathing air, the body transitions into what is known as primary flaccidity.
In this state, all muscles relax, leading to a loss of tension in eyelids, a potential drop of the jaw, and a loss of muscle tone overall. This relaxation can sometimes result in the involuntary release of bodily fluids, such as when the sphincters relax.

Interestingly, the position in which a person dies can influence the process. For example, many people experience death in the bathroom due to conditions like heart attacks that mimic the sensation of needing to use the toilet.
Excessive straining can also trigger cardiovascular events.
As the body progresses through decomposition, some physical changes can be surprising.
