In the aftermath of Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami, one man’s mission to find his beloved wife has captured the hearts of many. Yasuo Takamatsu, a 64-year-old man from Onagawa, has spent over a decade searching the ocean depths for the remains of his wife, Yuko, who was swept away by the devastating waves. His story is one of unrelenting love and determination, as he dives every week in the hope of bringing her home.
On March 11, 2011, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan triggered a tsunami that claimed nearly 20,000 lives. Among the missing was Yuko, a bank employee in Onagawa. When the tsunami hit, she sent Yasuo a chilling final message: “Are you okay? I want to go home.” Those were the last words he would ever hear from her.
Yasuo was in a neighboring town with his mother-in-law when the tsunami struck, unable to return to Onagawa until the chaos subsided.
By the time he arrived, the city was in ruins, and Yuko was nowhere to be found.
