The morning of September 4, 2024, began like any other at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia. But by the afternoon, the school halls had been turned into a scene of chaos, as gunshots echoed through the corridors. When the dust settled, four lives had been tragically taken, and the name of a 14-year-old boy, Colt Gray, became known across the nation.
Colt Gray wasn't a stranger to hardship. Raised in an environment plagued by dysfunction, his family life had been far from stable. His parents, Marcee and Colin Gray, had separated, and his father was described by Colt’s maternal grandfather, Charles Polhamus, as "evil." Polhamus revealed that Colt’s father was verbally abusive, regularly screaming at the family, creating a toxic environment that contributed to Colt's declining mental health. "He was a good kid once, but living under those conditions, it's no surprise what happened," Polhamus shared.

Just minutes before the horrific shooting, Colt's mother had contacted the school, warning of an "extreme emergency.
