When the season finale of "House of the Dragon" aired, fans were left in a state of bewilderment. The episode flashed a brief, enigmatic scene showing Otto Hightower locked up in a dungeon. This scene had no preceding context, making viewers question what led to this alarming twist in the storyline.
Before this dramatic conclusion, the last time viewers saw Otto, he was on his way to Oldtown. His journey had a clear purpose: to reunite with his grandson, Daeron Targaryen. However, the abrupt shift from traveling to reconnect with family to being confined in a cell throws a wrench into what seemed like a predictable narrative.
One has to wonder: what could have possibly gone wrong on his path to Oldtown?

During an Inside the Episode behind the scenes video, showrunner Ryan Condal revealed a tiny bit of information, explaining: “We find Otto in this cell somewhere, and we don’t know quite where he is or what happened to him. We were delighted to have Rhys reenter the story, and I will just say that the Otto Hightower tale has not yet come to an end.
Geeta Vasant Patel, who directed the House of the Dragon finale was also asked about Otto Hightower in her interview with Variety. She added: “I was asked to shoot that scene.
I want to know where he is, too. I don’t know! Those guys talk about a lot of things in the writers’ room, and then they don’t tell us. They don’t tell any of us! They don’t tell the actors, either. I don’t think it’s fair.”

It seems he’s been taken captive by someone, possibly Larys, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until next season for confirmation. In the books, it is actually Otto who meets with the Triarchy instead of Tyland Lannister.
They eventually accepted his alliance and sent 90 warships to the Gullet. However, after Rhaenyra and the Blacks manage to take back King’s Landing, they decide to behead Otto first, something he predicted early on in the books.
